Not exactly the same thing, but similarly, during my military career, there was always much discussion regarding the two objectives of military leadership: accomplish the mission, and take care of your troops. Over time, I came to the view (not popular with type A personalities, which, lets face it, is the most common type among military leaders) that given properly trained troops -which was not always a given, in my experience- if the leader takes care of his troops, the troops will take care of accomplishing the mission. I ran across a quote from a General, I forget which one, which went something like: your men will follow you to the very depths of hell so long as they believe that you are watching out for their best interests. In my last assignment before I retired, my guys performed superbly for the most part, and one of them told me it was because they knew I had their backs, that I was looking out for them.
